These artists along with a number of female artists continue to swim within the Seattle Hip Hop and musical scene and support Ladies First which strives to provide a space for them and put them FIRST as they navigate music oceans. Recently, Ladies First was mentioned in the Seattle Weekly to secure the standing legacy of women hustling against the tides. “Laura "Piece" Kelley Jahn is a nationally recognized spoken word poet, hip-hop artist and arts educator,” states Samara Lectures. Piece has been performing and teaching in Seattle, since the beginning of the Seattle’s slam poetry movement. She has competed on local and national levels winning prize after prize from the streets to national television, but the real winner is the listener as her rhymes move people to tears and create social change. Piece has inspired many young female and male artists to stand firm and pursue their dreams despite circumstances and limited tools and resources. As an educator and activist, her work through her lifetime stands as a testimony to all who use art and music to educate the community on politics and above all history and movements. This woman is a story telling warrior and blazes paths for others, like Beloved 01 and Onion Carrillo, one of the founders of Ladies First. BeLoved 01 is a regular at B-Girl Bench on Mondays and has graced the Ladies First OpenMic. She is a performer, educator, and community builder. She along with other artists are paving new paths and building upon the foundations of those before her. As a mother, like Piece, she is mixing new rhymes for her child and the community to create lasting spaces for women. DJ B-Girl has been a staple in Seattle since 2001. As a DJ, breaker, and producer who loves music she has used her art as a community organizer and local teaching artist. Her beats on her album will be featuring Piece, Toni Hill, Jerm, Asun, Julie C., Sista Hailstorm, Khanfidence, Phreewil, Cyreeta, DJ WD4D, Sage Nomad and Forrest. onesevennine is the creator of the Ladies First logo, fresh off her mural making talents for Beacon Hill Elementary School, WAPIFASA, and Hidmo. She is also the creator of the INDAYog I & II All Women's Hip Hop Show flyers. Her art work spands Seattle's businesses, community organizations, music CDs, and more. She has graced the walls and covers and we are blessed by her visual skills. These women, along with a multitude of Ladies First supporters, have made this monthly event something to recognize and stand up for. As momentum builds, don’t miss the tides or you will miss all the new waves of sound to come in 2008. Ladies First has been and is a project of Communities Against Rape and Abuse (CARA) since 2002 to showcase women’s talents, crafts, and arts. Sponsoring organizations, including B-Girl Bench, Hidmo Entertainment, Boom Box, and KBCS 91.3 FM Community Radio, come every first Saturday of the month to honor these women, listen to their voices and bring the noise to break the silence. This event is all ages and all genders and happens every first Saturday of the Month, rain or shine. The Spring 2008 Season consist of January through July 2008. For more information, email cara.intern at gmail.com. LADIES FIRST concepts are ever shifting and gathering, but there is a core of: 1. Providing women, trans, gender non-confirming, two-spirit, queer women space to be on the mic and practice their skills (visual and spoken) 2. Focus on voice and creation, hip hop or otherwise, to empower and give voice to individual struggles in a collective, supportive, and community space that centers marginalized voices in communities of color, not in a divisive way, but rather uplifting way. 3. Sustain partnerships, so more people are brought into the space, regardless of gender to hear these voices on stage 4. Stating who we are as CARA, but not prioritizing our story over the people that walk into the space. Meet people were they are at and give them beauty, temporary relative safety, creativity, and what ever peace they need to walk into the world with a pleasant memory of the possibilities and vision of a different future…. 5. Change the way “we” view ourselves, safety, and violence (state and sexual violence) For Booking Contact: Luzviminda Uzuri Carpenter (Lulu): cara.intern at gmail.com or 509-251-8953 For more information, about Laura “Piece” Kelley visit: http://www.samaralectures.com/lpiecekelleyjahn.html http://www.piece.be/ http://www.myspace.com/pieceproductions For more information about Beloved 01: http://www.myspace.com/beloved313 For more information about DJ B-Girl: http://bgirlmedia.com http://www.myspace.com/bgirl For more information about Communities Against Rape and Abuse (CARA) visit: http://www.cara-seattle.org/ For more information about Ladies First visit: www.myspace.com/seattleladiesfirst For more information about B-Girl Bench visit: www.bgirlbench.com For more information about Hidmo Entertainment visit: www.myspace.com/hidmo or email hidmolove@gmail.com For more information about KBCS 91.3 FM Community Radio: http://kbcs.fm/ |
