Curator's statement »

The Disability Pride Project at CARA is offering our second exhibit "Political Bodies: On Show, Showing Off" both to celebrate the power of art to be a tool for self expression and liberation, and as an opportunity for the community to come together in a spirit of organizing, celebration, and learning.

The show features drawings, paintings, photographs, 2-D, and 3-D pieces, mixed media pieces, poetry and other text elements contributed by emerging and established artists reflecting on the social and political nature of their experiences of disability. The artists come from a wide geographic area. While we continue to have the most representation from the Pacific Northwest there are pieces coming from California, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Washington DC, and even India, to name a few.

We are committed to making the show accessible. We ask that those attending the reception avoid wearing perfume or using other scented products. ASL interpretation will be provided for the opening reception. If you'd like the services of an interpreter certified in tactile sign please let us know. All text will be available in large print and on tape. The gallery space is wheelchair accessible and there is a wheelchair accessible bathroom. The LGBT Community Center is accessible by several (lift-equipped) bus routes including the 7, 11, and 12. You may want to contact Metro Transit to figure out which route is most practical for you at [TTY] (206) 684-1739 or [V](206) 553-3000. If you'd like additional accommodation please let us know.

For more information contact Joelle Brouner: (206) 322-4856.

CARA especially thanks A Territory Resource, a local, fabulous progressive foundation, for financially supporting this art exhibit and other cultural activism from the Disability Pride Project!
