To recognize the upcoming one-year anniversary of September 11th and its aftermath, CARA and our constituencies will be engaging in events that will help to build a world on a foundation of careful reflection, respect, safety, and peace. Please join us in supporting the following events:
September 11 Rally Against U.S. Wars Rally organizers call for people to speak out against wars without end, attacks on immigrants, increasing racism, erosion of civil liberties; cuts in social services; and repressive "homeland security" proposals. Sponsored by Seattle Women's Action Network. For more information call 206-984-6256.
Justice for ALL: The Aftermath of September 11 A year after the terrorist attacks of September 11, all across the country acts of intolerance and discrimination have eroded our sense of community. Physical and verbal attacks on those who 'look Arab' are three times what they were a year ago. State and federal agencies and law enforcement have increased the pressure on our communities by implementing discriminatory and anti-immigrant legislation, and by harassing, detaining and deporting large numbers of innocent people. These attacks on immigrants, refugees and people of color are particularly disturbing because they have created a climate of fear. These attacks affect whole communities in a fundamental way because they undermine the ideals of tolerance, religious freedom, diversity and equal treatment that inspired us to become members of American society. These attacks send a message not only to the individual victim, but to all members of the victim's community. They have created widespread fear and, ironically, a widespread sense of isolation. In Seattle, a broad range of communities are uniting for justice. In conjunction with Hate Free Zone Campaign of Washington, leading organizations in the Sikh, Muslim, East African, Arab American, Japanese American, South Asian and Latino communities are coordinating a Public Hearing on September 21st to tell our stories about life since September 11th to a panel of elected public officials. We want to show that we are not alone. We want to stand together to tell our stories. We want the general public, particularly our representatives, to know what we have experienced since the September 11th tragedy. We want to end the targeting. Racial Justice 9/11 Racial Justice 9-11 (RJ911) is a national network of Racial Justice organizations that seeks to build the power of people of color communities during a time of war. RJ911 understands that "war time" refers not only to the present U.S. military engagements in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Latin America. For us, war includes a wide range of international acts of aggression: economic sanctions, debt, and environmental destruction. It also refers to the low-intensity warfare against people of color communities within the United States (particularly against immigrants, the poor, youth, and women), and increased military spending at the expense of domestic human need: welfare, education, and housing. Since September 11, and the advent of the "Permanent War on Terrorism," this domestic war has escalated in the form of draconian legislation such as the Patriot Act, the denial of due process for all immigrants, and the expansion of the policing/ detention/prison complex. People of color are the targets of this domestic war. The Racial Justice Movement plays a crucial role in defeating the war program. The goal of RJ911 is to build a movement for peace and justice throughout communities of color. Contact: Alisa at CARA, alisa@cara-seattle.org, 206.322.4856
Not In Our Name: A Project of Resistance Let it not be said that the people of the United States did nothing when their government declared a war without limit and instituted stark new measures of repression. We will not give up our right to question. We will not hand over our consciences in return for a hollow promise of safety. We say NOT IN OUR NAME. Please joins for a Mass Day of Resistance on October 7, commemorating the anniversary of the first day of bombing Afghanistan. Another world is possible and we pledge to make it real.
